In a matter of hours Guyana celebrates her 50th Jubilee anniversary.
The excitement and buzz is in the air as it becomes the talk of the town while we hear whispers of “there won’t be another 50th”.
Family and friends are coming home to join in this grand celebration, which is, actually taking place throughout the month of May.
Preparations are underway at Durban Park where the Golden Arrow Head will be hoisted at midnight and thousands will be in attendance to witness this event. There will also be fireworks and dances to mark this event.
A walk around Georgetown reveals many smiling and happy faces. In all my years, I have never seen such patriotism among the people as everyone is involved in one way or the other to make this 50th anniversary a memorable one.
I see people happily eating and sharing with each other. I am also invited to parties, get-together and dinners.
I hear loud music in the streets and people chanting to the beat of the local hit song “G.U.Y.A.N.A”, while busy and enthusiastic shoppers make their way around the market square.
Concerts, sports, literary and food festivals are also on the agenda.
I hope to make it to the parade taking place in Georgetown tomorrow, on Independence Day itself.
